Growing Tips

Currant, Gooseberry Growing Tip

Are the leaves disappearing on your currant or gooseberry bush in early summer? Most likely the currant sawfly larvae are at work. The British have a simple prevention that works surprisingly well. Spread a thin layer of wood ashes around the base of the shrub. Some local gardeners use straw and claim it works better yet.

Product Overview
Currants (Ribes) These shade tolerant bushes produce an abundance of nutrient packed berries that are especially high in vitamin C. When eaten fresh, black currants have a very pungent and distinctive flavour that is definitely an acquired taste but they make the most delicious jams. The red, pink, and white varieties are much milder tasting. Bareroot plant

I ordered a couple of blackcurrant plants. They arrived promptly and I planted them right away and the delivery was great. One of my plants plant had several branches that died/dried out immediately, though I dont know if this was due the the quality of the plant or just damage during transplanting. but otherwise the plants are doing great now.

We've been customers of Whiffletree for years, and always find their nursery stock is healthy, robust, well-grown, and adapts well to our Zone 6 climate (SW Nova Scotia). The plants always arrive carefully packaged. We love the wonderful variety of edible fruit trees and bushes, both classic/heirloom and new/unique that they have available!

  3. Susan C. (verified owner)

This plant is such an over achiever. Within two weeks of planting it had tons of leaves and was flowering. It is now covered in berries and this exceeds all my expectations.
