GOLD BERRY CLOVE CURRANT

Price range: $23.95 through $28.95

Try this unique variation of the good old clove currant. You'll get the same profusion of slender sunshine-yellow trumpet-shaped flowers in the spring, accompanied by the same intoxicating clove and vanilla fragrance. But instead of the blossoms culminating in shiny black berries, this selection will give you glossy golden fruit, ripening over several weeks. The taste and texture are closer to a Concord grape or even a gooseberry, than to a regular currant. Pleasant for fresh eating and great for pies and jam. All clove currants make ideal edible, ornamental, and pollinator-friendly landscaping bushes. Mature size is 120-180cm (4-6') in height and width.

Currant, Gooseberry Growing Tip

Are the leaves disappearing on your currant or gooseberry bush in early summer? Most likely the currant sawfly larvae are at work. The British have a simple prevention that works surprisingly well. Spread a thin layer of wood ashes around the base of the shrub. Some local gardeners use straw and claim it works better yet.

What is Orchard Grade?

An 'orchard grade' is a tree that may be somewhat shorter, slightly crooked, or a bit scratched, or for some other reason is not a perfect front lawn specimen. These trees will work just as well in an orchard as a first or number one would, since they still produce the very same fruit.

What is a 2 year old tree?

A '2 year old tree' is one that has grown an extra season in our nursery field.

All our trees are planted in the field in the spring as rootstock. They are grafted in August of the 1st year. Most of our trees are dug out in November of the 2nd year. Some trees are in the ground for another season. We dig these in November of the 3rd year. These are considered to be '2 year old trees'.

A '2 year old tree' has bigger roots, a thicker trunk, and more branching (They might start fruiting a year earlier).
