For over 100 years the fruit breeding folks at the University of Minnesota have worked on developing better quality plums with adequate cold hardiness. They have released well over 20 new varieties that combine Prunus americana strains with the best Japanese cultivars. Although many have gone by the wayside now, the oldest one still being planted is Underwood, a Shiro cross related in 1921. The relatively large 4-5 cm (2") red fruit has a golden yellow, semi-freestone flesh. The plums, which ripen over several weeks are tender, sweet and juicy for ideal fresh eating, but also keep a bit longer than most hybrid varieties, so processing for jam, etc. is also a good option. Beautiful golden fall foliage is another fringe benefit.
