| We would like to thank everyone who participated in making our second annual Fruit Tasting Day a great success! Fall colours at peak and perfect weather resulted in an excellent turnout again. We thank everyone who took the time to fill in the sheets on fruit rankings. As could be expected, individual preferences varied widely. Interestingly enough, it seems that some of the more common or well-known varieties ended up getting top ratings. Obviously, taste is very subjective, and while your choices might be very different that does not make them wrong. Honeycrisp Apple was our top ranked fruit overall of the day! Although more difficult to grow in a home setting, the taste has made it a popular commercial variety. Close runners up Kinderkrisp and Snowsweet, are hardy varieties we plan on having a lot of stock for this season. Of the European Pears we have available this coming season, Paragon and Shenandoah received top marks for taste. As for our rare fruits table, the Arguta Hardy Kiwis were by far the most popular. There are many factors that can influence taste even beyond our personal preferences, including things like weather and storage time. Be sure to come back again next year, as we plan to include other varieties. We also welcome feedback from those of you who were here. Lines were long at peak time (about 10:30am - 1:30pm) and we have plans to improve that. One proposal we are considering is to have several tasting tables with specific fruit categories spread out. That way if you really came to sample the Asian Pears for instance, you could head directly to that table, rather than filing past 90 apple varieties before you get to them. Let us know what you enjoyed and send us your suggestions for additions or improvements. We look forward to seeing you again next year! |
