Meteor was developed at the University of Minnesota by crossing Montmorency with several Russian varieties. Although it has never become as widely known as its illustrious parent, Meteor offers some distinct advantages of its own. In terms of actual fruit, it is practically identical to Montmorency, with large bright red fruit, tart and tangy pale yellow flesh, and colourless juice. Meteor is a week later though, both in bloom and in ripening. The tree makes an ideal landscaping specimen with its profusion of showy white blossoms in spring and later, the dense, leaf spot resistant foliage which shields the fruit from sunscald, and even, to some degree, from birds. Naturally compact, Meteor matures at only 3-3.6m (10-12') in height and width.
