Obilnaja originated at the former Russian Experimental Station in Yalta, Ukraine, and no, that should not keep you from trying it. As awareness of this hardy Japanese x Myrobalan cross plum increases here in North America, so does reputation and popularity. The name in Russian means 'very productive'. This holds true here too! Thinning is usually required so the deep purple-red fruit can size up to it's 4-5 cm (1 7/8") potential. Obilnaja is impressing both backyard and commercial growers with it's rich sweet/spicy flavour and distinctive crispy texture. These plums have unusually small pits, and the pinkish yellow flesh is firm enough for shipping and/or storing. We expect Obilnaja to gain a following.
