Mother hails from Massachusetts, dating back to the 1840s. Somehow it eventually ended up achieving more prominence in England, where it is known as 'American Mother'. Perhaps it's unique balsamic flavour and slight wintergreen aroma tickled British tastebuds more persuasively than the American ones. Texture wise, it is definitely not a modern apple. It is better described as 'tender and creamy' than 'crunchy'. However, this Mother does have a sizeable family of fruit lovers who prefer it over many of the newer introductions. The tree has enough resistance to scab and other apple ailments to make it a sensible choice for the backyard grower.
