What Are Humates?
Humates are essentially the ultimate form of compost. The process of plant and animal matter slowly decomposing into a stable substance is called humification. The final stage of organic decay is a dark rich material called humus. Under certain conditions humus can be concentrated and compressed by soil, water, and sediment over thousands of years, eventually becoming a coal-like substance known as humates.
Humates are found in deposits under the ground in certain geographic areas. The humate deposit in Hanna, AB, is recognized for its superior quality which includes exceptionally high concentrations of molecular content known as humic and fulvic acids. In order to set this Alberta deposit apart from other lower quality products, the Black Earth company has named its product Humalite.

How Do Humates Work?
The humic and fulvic acids in Humalite work together as a symbiotic pair. Humic acid improves soil structure, enhancing aeration and moisture retention. It also increases the soil’s ability to hold nutrients and release them as needed. Fulvic acid delivers nutrients directly into plant cells. Together they enhance your soil’s biological activity so that the thriving beneficial microbes help your newly planted tree get off to a great start. Black Earth Humalite is especially effective in high pH soils.

Application Rates:
- Planting bareroot trees and shrubs: Disperse approximately 4 cups
per plant throughout soil while filling the hole.
- Garden beds: Apply 1-2 pounds per 100 sq feet and work into the
top few inches. Water in well.
- Lawns: Spread 3-10 pounds per 1000 sq feet. Water thoroughly.
- Potting soil: Mix 2 tablespoons per cubic foot of potting soil.
