King David has earned a name as an intensely flavoured apple and there has been lots of time to build that reputation. Discovered in an Arkansas farm fencerow in 1893, this chance seedling is speculated to be a cross of Jonathon and Winesap, which seems logical as it displays the best qualities of both. Back to the taste - Fedco Nursery describes it as thus: 'The initial bite is an explosion of flavours - pineapple, tangerine, lemon, sweet, sour, tart, sharp, aromatic, and spicy. You may wince or moan or scream. You may see stars.' Obviously, the best way to determine whether that description is slightly over the top is to grow King David yourself. The midsized, maroon-coloured apples are also great for pies or cider and will make a rich, yellow applesauce. The tree is vigorous, bearing young and regularly. Respectable disease resistance, especially to fireblight.
