Start the pear season on a high note with this hardy heirloom variety. Discovered in France by Nicolas Giffard in about 1825 and still considered a premium quality selection. Medium-large fruit with crisp, but tender, fine-grained flesh has a hint of vintage wine in it's sprightly flavour. It works well for both fresh eating and canning and is best if picked before fully ripe. Beurre Giffard is grown commercially in Quebec and even in Alaska. Precocious, productive, and blight resistant, it has also proven to be somewhat self-fertile.
SEMI-FERTILE* | ZONE 3 | HARVEST: EARLY-MID AUG.
All European (regular) and Asian pears will pollinate each other providing their bloom times overlap. Generally you can go by the expected harvest time, meaning only the very early and the very late might not be compatible with each other. However, since Asian pears, on average, bloom earlier than Europeans, you might pair an early European with a mid or late Asian.

I understand from the courier company that the product was not available for pickup on the scheduled day, and due to the weekend, it was picked up on Monday. When I opened the package, I didn’t find any instructions regarding preparation before planting. I recalled that my first shipment, about two years ago, came with such instructions.
In any event, I called your office, and a lady answered, advising me to “just plant it.” I suspected that wasn’t quite right, so I checked through a university AI resource and confirmed that the roots should be soaked for 4–6 hours before planting.
The good news is that both trees are doing well in 35-liter grower pots, and I’m hoping to graft both trees next year. On a side note, I spoke with Karen at your location a few years ago about my interest in gardening. I’ve been promoting your company within my community in Markham and among fellow gardening enthusiasts.
Please pass along my regards to Karen.
Thank you.
