The 'next big thing' from the University of Saskatchewan is here now and it is a 'Sweet Thing'. According to numerous taste-testers this shrub cherry delivers on the promise the name implies. Sweet Thing was developed by crossing Carmine Jewel (the first and most productive sour cherry released by the U of SK program) with Erdi Jubileum (a dark Hungarian tart cherry with an unusually high sugar content). The end result is large deep burgundy fruit averaging about 6 grams each, that the U of SK considers as the highest quality sour cherry they have observed thus far. Firm and sweet enough for fresh eating, they are also excellent for juicing and desserts. Sweet Thing's top-flight flavour comes at the expense of some cold-hardiness - it needs a more sheltered location than most shrub cherries. The bush shows some tendency to sucker. Matures at 2-2.4 m (6-8') high and wide.
