Believe it or not, this hardy cactus is actually native to the northeastern states and to southern Canada. It is also considered as an 'Endangered Species at Risk in Ontario'. Prickly Pear tolerates extreme winter conditions, including sub-zero temperatures, snow, frost and heavy rain. Over winter the skin will turn purple and crinkly as it slightly shrivels, but springtime should see it start to green up again. This clump-forming succulent shrub forms flat fleshy pads up to 25cm (10") across, and covered with clusters of reddish-brown bristles. In early summer, striking bright yellow flowers form along the edges of the pads. These are followed by the fruit, the so-called prickly pears, which turn reddish purple and boasts a strawberry-like flavour when ripe. They are most often used to make candies and jams. This unusual plant can either decorate a dry, sunny spot in your rock garden or be grown as a container plant, as the mature size is only 30-60cm (1-2') in height and width.

    I purchased two of these! I've planted them in a soil/sand mix in a large container. One sprouted 5 new pads within a few weeks. The other arrived with a little blemish and was a bit slower to get going - but, I just noticed two new pads forming! Excited to see how they produce. I was prepared to keep them away from kids/pets, but they are not spiky at all. Excited to see how they overwinter in my 5B garden.

What is Orchard Grade?

An 'orchard grade' is a tree that may be somewhat shorter, slightly crooked, or a bit scratched, or for some other reason is not a perfect front lawn specimen. These trees will work just as well in an orchard as a first or number one would, since they still produce the very same fruit.

What is a 2 year old tree?

A '2 year old tree' is one that has grown an extra season in our nursery field.

All our trees are planted in the field in the spring as rootstock. They are grafted in August of the 1st year. Most of our trees are dug out in November of the 2nd year. Some trees are in the ground for another season. We dig these in November of the 3rd year. These are considered to be '2 year old trees'.

A '2 year old tree' has bigger roots, a thicker trunk, and more branching (They might start fruiting a year earlier).
