It's finally here - a real almond that can thrive in Zone 5, perhaps even in a very sheltered Zone 4! When we acquired this potential celebrity, we had some questions. Can the trees survive our winters? Will the nuts ripen here? Will the flavour be as great as it is 'cracked up' to be? In our own experience, with trees fruiting at several local sites, our answer is a definite yes on all three counts. The claims for high disease resistance and late bloom period also seem to bear out, so we consider it 'the real deal'! This intriguing variety originated in the mountains of northern Iran, finding its way to North America through an acquaintance of Kentucky nurseryman, Cliff England, named Javid. Now it's yours to enjoy!

    Growing beautifully 😍 The leaves are so strong looking. Even this heatwave 2025 Ontario summer with water care of course didn't stop Whiffletree from growing new growth. Because our bare fruit trees are first season we wanted root growth not fruit. We most likely won't let any of our first season 2026 Whiffletree trees fruit next season either because we are aiming for root growth. We didn't have much Japanese beetle activity on any of our Whiffletree bare roots trees either. This tree had none. We put alfalfa meal in our soil to that helps with those bugs for all our bare root trees.

What is Orchard Grade?

An 'orchard grade' is a tree that may be somewhat shorter, slightly crooked, or a bit scratched, or for some other reason is not a perfect front lawn specimen. These trees will work just as well in an orchard as a first or number one would, since they still produce the very same fruit.

What is a 2 year old tree?

A '2 year old tree' is one that has grown an extra season in our nursery field.

All our trees are planted in the field in the spring as rootstock. They are grafted in August of the 1st year. Most of our trees are dug out in November of the 2nd year. Some trees are in the ground for another season. We dig these in November of the 3rd year. These are considered to be '2 year old trees'.

A '2 year old tree' has bigger roots, a thicker trunk, and more branching (They might start fruiting a year earlier).
