Would you buy this variety if it was simply named 'New Pear'? Well, it actually is! Developed quite recently at the University of California, Shin Li™ is a cross between Kikisui (a Japanese variety) and Tsu Li (a Chinese variety) so for a name for this new pear they combined 'Shin' ('new in Japanese) and 'Li' ('pear' in Chinese). In our opinion this pear is praiseworthy, no matter what you call it. Like all Asians, the crisp juicy flesh is sweet and aromatic, but Shin Li™ adds a subtle unique touch of cinnamon spice. Storage is exceptional - the large to extra-large fruit can hold its flavour and firmness for up to six months. Another notable attribute- in fireblight resistance Shin Li™ is second to none.
NEEDS A POLLENIZER | ZONE 4/5 | HARVEST : MID-LATE AUG
Asian Pears are very precocious which means they tend to produce quite heavily when only a few years old. This can result in a weakened tree as all its energy is going into producing fruit instead of forming a sturdy tree. For this reason we recommend removing most of the fruit for the first several years.
All European (regular) and Asian pears will pollinate each other providing their bloom times overlap. Generally you can go by the expected harvest time, meaning only the very early and the very late might not be compatible with each other. However, since Asian pears, on average, bloom earlier than Europeans, you might pair an early European with a mid or late Asian.
