We suggest growing your combination tree as an ‘open center’ by trimming out secondary branches that grow into the middle. If one variety starts overgrowing the others, it can be slowed down by spreading the branch or tying it down. Summer pruning can also be helpful for the more aggressive varieties, while less vigorous ones can be stimulated by dormant pruning in spring. With a bit of trial and error pruning, you can keep all of the varieties well balanced.

Planted it in a 25 gallon grow bag last year. Pruned it a bit last summer & was pleasantly surprised to see how well it grew back this year. It has a vertical growth habit, growing tall like crazy. Glad it's growing so well & beautifully. Being a bit of a novice with planting in grow bags, I realized that bare root trees need to grow sufficiently & produce branches before being pruned. I made a mistake in pruning them, thinking they will come back, and sadly most of them got stressed & couldn't be revived after winter. They were growing so well after I potted them & I guess I made them weak after pruning. So that's why I was happy to see the plum tree grow back. I've learned now that I shouldn't prune the trees that are planted in fabric bags the same way one would prune those planted in the ground because the root system is confined in pots & so they need to be established a few years before pruning. This year I just let them grow after potting them, and they are growing abundantly.
