AC™ Harblaze is a Stark Delicious x Hardired cross, which makes it a second generation graduate from the Harrow Research Station. In various field trials, AC™ Harblaze has shown impressive performance compared with other nectarine varieties, including Harko. It consistently came out on top for winter hardiness, canker resistance, fruit size, firmness, and flavour. Although it has lower productivity numbers, this really translates to say less fruit thinning is required. AC™ Harblaze is a real stunner in spring with large, showy pink blossoms, but the real reward is the glossy, scarlet fruit.

Peach / Nectarine Growing Tip

Stop! Do not plant your peach or nectarine tree in that sheltered nook of the south side of your house. Although well meant, this very common mistake is almost certain to doom your new tree. Of course extreme cold is hard on peach trees, but the warm noonday sun on a late winter day is actually worse. A dark tree trunk will warm up considerably but then the temperature drops and the bark refreezes. To avoid this fluctuation, look for a planting site in the winter shade (north side) of a building or group of evergreens. In other word, close enough to the building to be shaded from the low winter sun but far enough back to get full exposure in the summertime when the sun is high. The goal is uniform cold so as
not to interrupt dormancy. Some growers white wash the trunks and lower branches of older peach trees in late fall with a cheap interior latex paint to protect from sun damage in winter. Young trees should have trunks wrapped with a light coloured blanket or covering.

    While I have only had the tree since May 2026, and weather in Alberta has since been snow, hot then freezing, and then 300mm rain, Harblaze has started leafing out! I am very grateful for Whiffletree’s best practices guide that came with my order and the funny but true advice to hard prune them once in the ground. Oh the sadness, but I know it is an investment for the current health and future abundance of theis nectarine tree.

What is Orchard Grade?

An 'orchard grade' is a tree that may be somewhat shorter, slightly crooked, or a bit scratched, or for some other reason is not a perfect front lawn specimen. These trees will work just as well in an orchard as a first or number one would, since they still produce the very same fruit.

What is a 2 year old tree?

A '2 year old tree' is one that has grown an extra season in our nursery field.

All our trees are planted in the field in the spring as rootstock. They are grafted in August of the 1st year. Most of our trees are dug out in November of the 2nd year. Some trees are in the ground for another season. We dig these in November of the 3rd year. These are considered to be '2 year old trees'.

A '2 year old tree' has bigger roots, a thicker trunk, and more branching (They might start fruiting a year earlier).
