Saskatoons (Amelanchier alnifolia) This prairie native shrugs off harsh, sub-zero winters and comes back with its silvery leaves and spectacular white flowers followed by heavy berry crops. The sweet, purple almond-flavoured berries make an absolutely delicious pie. Plant a hedge row along the windward side of your orchard or vineyard and do two things at once: provide protection for more tender plants and lure birds away from your main crop. Attractive fall foliage is an added bonus. Saskatoons are probably the simplest of all berries to grow. Unlike blueberries they take whatever soil you’ve got without complaining. They do respond well to added fertility. Mulching with compost is definitely beneficial. Bareroot plants
