Raspberries come in a wide variety of colours and bear fruit one year after planting on one year old canes except for ever-bearing varieties which bear fruit on new canes. We recommend black raspberries because they are non-suckering and they adapt well to cold climates, can take poor soil conditions and can grow in full sun or full shade. Not to mention that they are delicious! Black raspberries are also one of the few plant species that seem to enjoy growing right next to a black walnut tree.

Summer bearing varieties produce fruit on second-year canes which are usually pruned out after summer harvest.
Fall bearing varieties produce fruit on first year canes and are usually mowed in the spring to produce a large fall crop.
